The station was opened in February 1985 on King George Island and was the first Chinese Antarctic settlement.

It has the capacity of accommodating 80 summering persons and 40 in winter season.

The members of the Chinese Antarctic Expedition have been making right through the year daily observations on such subjects as meteorology, ionosphere, upper-atmospheric physics, geomagnetism and seismology.
During the austral summer period every year, scientific research is also carried out on geology, glaciology, biology, environmental science, marine science.
