In 1981, "Georg Von Neumayer" Station was established on the Ekstrom Ice Shelf as a research observatory for geophysical, meteorological and atmospheric chemistry measurements, as well as a logistics base for summer expeditions.

Georg Von Neumayer, whom the station is named after, was an important patron of Germany's research activities in Antarctica.

After 10 years of operation, the old Georg Von Neumayer Station has already sunk 14 m deep into the ice due to ice movements and heavy snow deposits, therefore the construction of Neumayer II new station was necessary.

In March 1992, the new station opened only 10 km from the original site.
