The station is of historic importance as the earliest example of British
scientific research station in the Antarctic Peninsula region. It was established
as Base-A in February 1944 by the Royal Navy during the operation Tabarin
and remained occupied almost continuously until January 1962.
Initially scientific research carried out at the station was topographic
survey, geology, meteorology, botany. From the 1950s the station played
an important role in ionospheric research and was a key monitoring site
during the International Polar Year 1957.
In 1996 the base was restored then opened to visitors during the Antarctic
summer.
