In 1976, the first East German research station, Georg Forster Station was built in Antarctica.

During its 17 years of existence, more than 100 scientists worked at the station. In particular, their ozone measurements gained international recognition.

On 22 May 1985 the first balloon-borne ozonesonde was successfully launched by at Georg Forster Station. The following weekly ozone soundings mark the beginning of the continuous investigation of Germany to study the vertical ozone distribution in the southern hemisphere.

The station was abandoned in February 1993 and completly dismantled in 1996.
